In the year 2003 we had the rare privilege to work with the late Ehud Manor, one the most prolific and significant Israeli lyricists of all times.
We were invited to take part in a benefit performance to celebrate the Bar Mitzvah year of Shalva Beit Nachshon, a center for children with special needs.
The performance was to take place in the Henry Crown Hall at the Jerusalem Theater. The event’s organizers asked us to compose music for the poem, “Heaven’s Special Child,” written in English by an anonymous author, translated into Hebrew by Ehud Manor and engraved on two pillars at the entrance to the center.
Manor, in anticipation of the new melody we were to compose, took a fresh look at the words, changing them here and there. He also invited Hanan Yovel, a renowned Israeli singer, to sing the song during the benefit and in the studio recording. The words touched us deeply, broadened our perceptions and created a space in our hearts – and from that place, the melody was born.
The producer Daniel Cohen, who at that time assisted in our performance productions, and who was producing a film about Shalva, was responsible for introducing us to Shalva and initiating the project. We toured the premises with him, and were deeply impressed by the thought behind each and every room and facility, and the genuine love that is invested in these children.
The performance was filmed and later broadcast on Channel 2. Joining Hanan Yovel as guest performers were Eyal Ein-Habar, principal flutist with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra; Sunita Stanislow, the renowned harp player; and Shomo Moyal, the accomplished contrabass player. The late Ehud Manor served as the performance’s director.
